The Rose and Jack Tragedy that isn’t Titanic
I had a huge kick at how Gaiman named them Rose and Jack.

On the last page, read the headline on the nurse’s paper.

Now based on the fact that the Holdaways (are solicitors; a family business passed on) and McGuires have been working with each other for decades and that that kind of news is a huge headline on the paper, we can safely assume that the town is small.
Add that with the prior conversation where we find out that Jack has never received a blowjob from a woman; my first thought was immediately OH U GAY MAN because he was so damn specific! my gaydar it rang so hard
the phone call where we find out he’s actually in a relationship with someone;
Gaiman’s style of leaving either subtle hints or funny clues in the background;
Gaiman’s writing style that one thing in the story is always connected to something else;
a grandfather named Desire that may or may not have controlled the local solicitor’s partner’s desire as revenge for hurting Rose;
and that this grandfather is on very good terms with his sister Despair;
we’ve got a pretty heavy set of context clues there that leads to the conclusion that Jack is the headline in the paper.

I had to go through issues 1-13 of The Kindly Ones to get all these. Ended up crying again. T_T This is the arc of the Sandman that’s the most emotionally heavy and philosophical and I’ve only read the series once, but this will be what’ll get me every time. My heart. MORPHEUS T___T And the way that EVERY RANDOM DISCONNECTED THING in the whole series is tied up here and connected just makes me into fangirl goo for Neil’s writing and plotting abilities.
talkplaylove’s in depth examination of jack and rose’s relationship ;D
