Morningstar’s final argument: That chapter in Sandman: Season of Mists where Dream accompanies Lucifer Morningstar as the devil locks the last few gates of Hell and then gives Dream the key has got to be one of my favorite parts in the whole collection. A treatise on religion and morality in a single comic panel.

This page is one of my favorites of the entirety of Sandman. How does Neil Gaiman do it?
“Why do they blame me for all of their failings? They use my name as if I spend my entire day sitting on their shoulders, forcing them to commit acts they would otherwise find repulsive. ‘The Devil made me do it.’ I have never made one of them do anything. Never. They live their own lives. I do not live their lives for them…They talk of me going around and buying souls, like a fishwife come market day, never stopping to ask themselves why. I need no souls. And how can anyone own a soul? No. They belong to themselves…they just hate to have to face up to it.”
